Heliogenesis

A full-stack institute for material independence.

We start at the molecule and we finish at the city. Living things make the material. The material makes the building. The building makes a place worth living in.

The sun arrives every day and asks nothing. We move one hundred billion tons of the earth each year and throw nine tenths away. We map what replaces it, from cement grown by bacteria to cooperative banks.

We publish everything we find. The whole record goes into the commons, so anybody can copy it.

Our fellows work across biology, building, economics and governance. No single field can carry a change this size.

Three vectors with project counts: material independence 140, community coordination 17, human flourishing 19
The catalogue, September 2026. 176 projects. 104 of them already sell at commercial scale.

V3 Material Independence Bacterial Cement

Bacteria that grow cement at room temperature, without a kiln

Portland cement carries about eight percent of all global carbon output. Five firms in the catalogue grow cement instead of burning it: Biomason, Prometheus Materials, Green Basilisk, BioZeroc, and Materrup. Four of the five already sell today at commercial scale.

V3 Material Independence MyceliumAlgae

Packaging and panels grown from fungus and seaweed

Ecovative grows packaging foam in seven days. Mogu presses mycelium into acoustic panels and flooring. Notpla has replaced more than seven million single-use plastic items with seaweed. None of the three needs a refinery, and all three run at commercial scale today in Europe or in the United States.

V3 Material Independence Living Materials

Materials that stay alive after leaving the factory

Twenty-three entries in the catalogue are living or programmable materials. Self-reproducing bricks at Boulder in Colorado. Photosynthetic paint at Newcastle. Fungal-bacterial bricks that heal themselves in New York. Fourteen of the twenty-three sit in a laboratory, which tells you exactly where the money still has to go.

V2 Community Coordination Cooperatives

Seventeen economies that already run on cooperation

Mondragon holds seventy thousand worker-owners. Emilia-Romagna runs eight thousand cooperatives and a third of its regional product. Preston moved seventy-five million pounds of procurement back into its own city. These are not proposals. They are audited, and most of them are decades old.

V1 Human Flourishing PolicyHealth

What happens when a government writes inner development into its national budget

Japan spent four million dollars on sixty-two forest therapy sites and now counts millions of visits each year. New Zealand made nature prescriptions free in 2025. Bhutan screens every policy against nine domains of wellbeing. Nineteen programmes of this kind sit in the catalogue, and fifteen of them are now permanent policy.

Stack Research EnergyWater

One stack that carries energy, water, materials, food, and shelter together

Each layer feeds the next one. Desalination brine drives osmotic power. Farm waste feeds the bioreactor. Bioreactor residue returns to the soil. Nothing leaves the loop as waste, which is the entire difference from the machine that we run today.

We will own none of it. What we learn belongs to everyone who lives with the result.

More About Our Model
The Heliogenesis model: material independence, community coordination and human flourishing feeding one open commons

Heliogenesis works along three vectors. Each one is an experiment in how a transition can be sped up. Curiosity, evidence, honest arithmetic.

Material independence replaces the extracted input. Community coordination replaces the extractive owner. Human flourishing replaces the goal. Exit-to-Planet releases every result into the commons.
