Materials that stay alive after leaving the factory
Every material we build with today is dead. Concrete cures and then only decays. Steel oxidises. Timber, once cut, has no way to repair the hole you drill through it. We have accepted that as the nature of building.
A small field is testing the other option. If a material contains living cells, it can respond. It can seal its own crack, sense a load, change colour under strain, or capture carbon while it sits in a wall. The idea is old and the practice is very young, and the catalogue is blunt about the gap: of twenty-three entries under living and programmable materials, fourteen have not yet left a laboratory bench.
The work that has left is worth naming precisely. Green Basilisk sells concrete with dormant bacteria inside it, which wake when water reaches a crack and precipitate limestone to close it. The tunnel at Schiphol airport uses it. At Boulder, the Srubar group has grown bricks that reproduce: split one, feed the halves, and you have two. At Newcastle, a group is spraying photosynthetic cyanobacteria onto a wall as a coating that captures carbon while it dries and stays alive afterwards.
These are not the same kind of claim. One is a product with a maintenance history. One is a paper with a photograph. We keep both, and we mark which is which.
Why the gap is wide
A living material has to satisfy two audiences that rarely meet. A biologist asks whether the organism survives, at what temperature, on what feed, and for how long. A structural engineer asks for a number that does not move for fifty years. Those questions pull in opposite directions, because the property that makes the material interesting is the property that makes it hard to certify. A material that changes is a material whose datasheet has a time axis, and no code knows how to read one.
There is a regulatory problem underneath as well. Several of these materials use engineered organisms, and putting an engineered organism inside a wall in a city is a different conversation from putting one inside a sealed tank. It is a fair conversation to have. It is also one that nobody is currently funding anybody to have properly, which is why the field talks to itself.
Our position is that fourteen laboratory entries is a finding, not a failure. It tells you where the next money should go, and it tells you which claims to discount when a company promises a self-healing city within five years. We would rather publish the awkward ratio than the photograph.
