The Heliogenesis Model
The extractive economy is not broken. It does exactly what it was built to do. It turns the biosphere into short-term output faster than anything in history, and it sends the bill to soil, to water, and to people not yet born.
Heliogenesis works along three vectors. Each one is an experiment in how a transition can be sped up. Curiosity, evidence, honest arithmetic.
Material Independence
This vector replaces the extracted input with a grown one. Bacteria that make cement without a kiln. Fungus pressed into acoustic panels. Seaweed instead of single-use plastic. Protein fibre brewed in a tank rather than cut from an animal. Most of these already sell at commercial scale, which means the science question is largely settled and the remaining question is industrial. The catalogue names every firm, so you can check it.
By separating the question of what a material can do from the question of where it was dug up, we free a designer to choose on merit, on cost, and on what it leaves behind.

Solar energy
Photovoltaic capture plus osmotic power from the salinity gradient, which yields roughly three quarters of a kilowatt hour for every cubic metre.

Fresh water
Solar thermal desalination. It is membrane-free, and it runs without any grid connection.

Grown materials
A single bioreactor for cellulose, mycelium, bioplastic, and biological cement.

Food
Regenerative agriculture tied into the same loop, so that farm residue feeds the bioreactor and bioreactor residue returns to the soil again.

Shelter
Compressed earth blocks and bio-composites, built from the material already standing on the site.
Community Coordination
A better material changes nothing if the same owner captures the gain. This vector replaces the extractive owner. The alternative already runs at scale: Mondragon with seventy thousand worker-owners, the cooperative district of Emilia-Romagna, the Preston procurement model, the Sardex mutual credit circuit, and the WIR bank, which has traded since 1934.
These structures give long-term career options to people who would otherwise leave a region within a decade. By holding ownership close to the place that carries the risk, a community keeps the return, and the technical know-how stays in the region where the work actually happens.
Human Flourishing
A machine pointed at the wrong goal will find a way to reach it. So the third vector is the goal itself. It is not a soft extra. Several states already treat inner development as public infrastructure: forest therapy in Japan, nature prescriptions in New Zealand, nine wellbeing domains screening every policy in Bhutan. Most of these are permanent public programmes, and not short pilots or trials.
This vector is also where our exit model sits. Heliogenesis runs on Exit-to-Planet: every result, every specification, and every piece of intellectual property is released into the commons rather than sold to the highest bidder. We are not building an asset to flip. A transition that depends on one owner staying benevolent for forty years is not a transition, it is a bet, and the historical record of that bet is poor. So we remove the bet from the design.
