The building materials that a working forest can supply
This is the least exciting part of the catalogue and probably the most useful. Nine entries cover engineered wood and plant fibre. Eight of the nine are commercial. Nothing here needs an invention. It needs a specification and an order.
Cross-laminated timber is the clearest case. Layers of softwood are glued at right angles into a panel that carries load like a slab of concrete, at a fraction of the weight and with the carbon locked inside it rather than released during manufacture. Stora Enso has produced more than a million cubic metres. Buildings of ten storeys and more stand in Norway, Austria, and Britain, and they have stood long enough to be boring.
Plant fibre covers the rest of the envelope. STEICO in Germany is the largest producer of wood fibre insulation in Europe. IsoHemp in Belgium presses five million hempcrete blocks a year in an automated plant, about five houses a day. EcoCocon in Lithuania makes a prefabricated wall panel that is ninety-eight percent renewable, mostly straw. Amorim in Portugal turns cork into insulation and acoustic board. MOSO engineers bamboo into beams and flooring that stands in for tropical hardwood.
Accoya in the Netherlands modifies ordinary softwood chemically so that it lasts outdoors for fifty years under warranty, which removes most of the argument for cutting a tropical tree.
The real constraint
Supply is not the limit. Forests in Europe grow more each year than is harvested, and the fibre crops involved are fast. The limit is procurement and insurance. A public client writes a tender against a specification, an insurer prices a building against a claims history, and both documents were written when the only serious options were concrete and steel. A timber building that is cheaper, lighter, and lower in carbon can still lose the tender because the form has no box for it.
This is why we file the wood entries under material independence rather than under sustainability. A region with forests, a hemp crop, and a straw surplus can supply most of its own building envelope without importing anything. That is a security argument and an economic one, and it happens to lower emissions. Framed that way it reaches a different official, and different officials control different budgets.
The work we want to fund here is not a laboratory at all. It is a set of worked tender documents, insurance precedents, and honest cost comparisons that a small municipality can copy directly, without hiring a consultant first. Unglamorous, entirely reusable, and worth far more per euro spent than another material trial.
